I Was in Prison and You Visited Me

Solitary confinement in the psychiatric ward of a state prison is one of the lowest places on earth you can find yourself.  But in the words of Corrie Ten Boom, "There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still".  That is what Phil Stallings, Nancy Rae Martin and I experienced tonight at Kirkland prison as we sought to minister the love of God into that dark place.  What we saw were men reaching out their arms of faith and crying out to God like drowning me would reach out for a life-jacket.  Here was the message:
1. His Eye is on the Sparrow - God loves you and knows where you are right now and cares about you.  He can set you free!
2. Near the Cross -This is the place where you can meet the Savior, Jesus Christ, and receive His forgiveness for your sins.
3. Listen - If you will listen you will hear God's voice calling out your name.  If you will listen, it's a still small voice no one can explain.  But if you listen and obey that voice you'll never be the same.  For He will cleanse you, He will remove from you every guilty stain.
4. He's Been Faithful - Even in your darkest hour, He is faithful and will keep every one of His promises.  He will never leave you nor forsake you.
5. Amazing Grace - And because of His grace you can be saved and know that He will bring you into His forever home!

Father, tonight as I fall asleep in my comfortable bed, I'm asking you for an added blessing for the men of Kirkland.  May they find true freedom from the bondages that enslave the soul and the mind.  And may they bring glory to your name!

D.S. al Coda is Back!

After a three-year hiatus from writing this Blog, I have picked up D.S. al Coda once again.  I left off this blog site as I wrote a weekly column for the Lexington Chronicle since January of 2019.  I felt somewhat restricted from being able to write solely about the most important things in life to me--our Heavenly Father and the salvation we can have through Jesus Christ, His Son. I enjoyed the experience of writing for the paper and felt I should do so as my father, Rev. The Greatest War Hero of All Time

Today is Memorial Day.   This national holiday began after the Civil War in 1868 and was originally called Decoration Day since it began as a practice of decorating the graves of soldiers in the national cemeteries.    Since it originated in the north by those wanting to memorialize the union soldiers who had died, the southern states began having their own Confederate Decoration Day traditions, but by the 20th century the two competing factions merged into a unified Memorial Day to honor all Americans who had died in military service.    After many years of Memorial Day being observed every year on May 30, no matter what day of the week it fell, in 1968 Congress passed a law making 4 national holidays to always be on a Monday to give us four 3-day weekends.   So, Memorial Day is now always on the last Monday of May, and it marks the beginning of summer in America.     Do you have any idea how many Americans have died in combat over our 241-year history? 1.1 Million.
